ISSUE UPDATE: Senate Banking Committee Hearings
On March 25, 2009 the Senate Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce began hearings to “study the credit and debit card systems in Canada and their relative rates and fees, in particular for
businesses and consumers.”
On the opening day of the Senate Banking Committee Hearings (March 25) Competition Bureau Deputy Commissioner, Richard Taylor announced to the Committee that the Bureau would conduct an investigation of Visa and MasterCard practices in Canada under the rules in the Competition Act governing “abuse of dominance”.
